A great resource if you want to shoot in the editorial market
A national men's fashion magazine photo editor (we can assume) has a new anonymous blog detailing life at work, including fee structures, how he picks photographers and what he thinks about them at A Photo Editor.
Especially enjoyable is the rationale for that $ 350 day rate at Why not just hire someone new? and the readers comments and his replies.

To be fair, I don't think he/she was justifying the $350/day rate. But was explaining that it's a more expensive gamble than that when trying new people due to additional shoot expenses.
there's another interesting post that's a little older that talks about having to come in under budget and how budgets are decided upon for the year etc...
